Methodology

Hemagglutination

 

Compatibility testing consists of: (1) review of patient’s past history, (2) ABO and Rh typing of patient and donor, (3) antibody screening of patient, and (4) crossmatch between donor red blood cells and patient’s plasma. If antibody screen is negative, immediate spin crossmatch is performed. If antibody screen is positive, antiglobulin technique crossmatch is performed.

Specimen Requirements

Minimum of one full pink-top (EDTA) tube. Transport refrigerated.


NOTE:

Transfusion candidates MUST be wearing a valid Blood Bank Identification wristband.

Blood Bank Identification number on wristband MUST be present on blood specimen tube.
