Test Code MTB-RIF M tuberculosis (MTB) with Rifampin Resistance Rapid PCR

Important Note

NOTE: Due to safety considerations with regards to the handling of specimens suspected to contain M.tuberculosis, this test will only be performed during Day Shift hours (06:30 - 15:00) by staff specially trained in AFB safety precautions. The test can be performed STAT during these hours and takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

NOTE: Culture, Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB) must also be performed.

Specimen Requirements

Test can be performed on Raw Sputum (Expectorated or Induced) or Sputum Sediment (residual specimen after processing for culture).

 

If submitting Raw Sputum, collect sputum specimen (Expectorated or Induced) per normal protocols into a sterile container. The minimum volume required is ~2mL. Refer to Microbiology Specimen Collection Manual for additional instructions. Raw Sputum is stable at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerated for up to 7 days.

 

Sputum Sediment is stable refrigerated for up to 7 days.
