Methodology

Rapid Smear for Herpes Viral Changes

Specimen Requirements

For urgent cases, page pathologist on call at beeper number 302-441-5997. Tzanck smears have a 50% sensitivity, so culture may be helpful depending on clinical situation.

Forms: Request for Surgical Pathology and Non-Gyn Cytology

Collection Instructions:

1. Using a lead pencil, write patient’s name and date of collection on frosted end of slide.
2. Remove necrotic material to reach fresh specimen area, and scrape underlying lesion.
3. Prepare a direct smear on slide, and let air dry completely.

4. Place slide in a plastic slide holder.

5. Label holder with patient’s name, date of collection, physician’s name, and hospital identification number (if applicable).
