Methodology

If microbiology studies are required, Microbiology instructions will supercede the cytology instructions. Microbiology studies must be ordered in clinical laboratory computer or on a Request for Microbiology Testing Form.

Specimen Requirements

Supplies for fine needle aspiration are available from Beebe Community Laboratory. Call pathologist performed palpable mass fine-needle aspiration service at 302-645-3595 to schedule. 

 

Container/Tube: 2 air-dried direct smears

Specimen Volume: See Container/Tube.

Forms: Request for Surgical Pathology and Non-Gyn Cytology

Collection Instructions:

1. Follow universal precautions.

2. Perform FNA, first pass. It is suggested to sample lesion in 3 directions.
3. Prepare 2 properly labeled, air-dried direct smears.

4. Rinse needle and syringe using Cytolyt fixative fluid in a properly labeled, red-top tube.

5. Discard all needles and syringes.
6. Submit slide, tube, and request form in a biohazard bag to Beebe Community Laboratory.

The above process may be repeated several times. Use new slide for each pass and indicate pass # on label. If sampling a different mass, use new tube of CytoLyt fixative.
