Important Note

M Spike is not  a test, it is a Diagnosis. If an MD orders M Spike it could mean one of the following three tests:

1. Serum Protein Electrophoresis

2. Monoclonal Protein Study, Serum

3. Immunoglobulin M (IgM)

You should call the MD to verify which test he/she wants. If unable to contact MD:

1. If the patient has been here before, look at their history to see what kind of testing they have had in the past. If they have had one of the above tests, order that.

2. If there is no history Order and collect  a Monoclonal Protein Study, Serum. Testing can be verified with MD later. If you are unable to get in touch with the MD, leave a note on the requisition for Specimen Processing to order an .Error for Clarification, and they will clarify the order.
